Out and Proud: Things to Prepare Before You Come Out

Coming out can be crucial for our emotional well-being, as it allows us to live more authentically. But doing it in Indonesia, where societal and legal challenges exist, requires careful preparation. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Read Your Audience | Assess your family’s, colleague’s, and social circle’s views on LGBTQIA+ issues. Are they conservative or open-minded? Consider the potential impact on your relationship with them.
  2. Assess Your Safety | Ensure that you have a safe place to go if the reaction is negative. Also note that some regions in Indonesia enforce local regulations (Perda) that might criminalize certain LGBTQIA+ activities.
  3. Plan Your Communication | Choose a time when the person you are coming out to is likely to be calm and receptive. Be clear about what you want to communicate and how much detail you’re comfortable sharing. Write it down if needed.
  4. Have a Backup Plan | Identify people you can call or places you can go if things go badly after you come out. It’s also important to have financial resources or a plan if coming out affects your job or housing situation.
  5. Consider Gradual Disclosure | Start by telling a few trusted people before broadening the circle. This can help you build confidence and adjust your approach as needed.
